All the attention from Toronto Maple Leaf fans has fallen towards Auston Matthews this season, as he has been scoring at a tremendous pace. With the superstar passing 50 goals just the other night, it's safe to say Matthews is having an MVP calibre season.
However, Mitch Marner is quietly having himself a hot streak as well. He has 2 or more assists in 6 straight games. The only other player to have more is Wayne Gretzky, whose streak extended to 8 games.
Mitch Marner is already well known as one of the NHL's best playmakers, with incredible passing skills as one of the reasons he is a top point scorer nearly every year. However, this year has been different. Partially because he is on Auston Matthews' line, but the point game is a two-way street.
In 55 games, Marner has 22 goals and 48 assists for 70 points. He is on pace to edge out his assist total from last season of 69, and blow his last season total of 99 points out of the water with a projected 114 points.
While Auston Matthews has made his name as one of the NHL's best goal scorers in recent history, it doesn't happen without Mitch Marner, who is becoming one of the best playmakers in his own right.
As seen on Maple Leafs Daily - "One Leaf is on the cusp of breaking a longstanding Wayne Gretzky record and it's not Matthews"
