Thatcher Demko, the team's number one goalie, is close to making a return from the injury reserve, and it could be bad news for the other goaltenders in the organization. With Arturs Silovs playing well and showing he can be Demko's number two in the playoffs, DeSmith was slowly pushed to the team's number three position.
Rick Tocchet mentioned that while no official decisions were made, Silovs should get the start today against the Coyotes, and they could carry three goalies into the playoffs.
While DeSmith could be an interesting option in the playoffs, considering his vast experience, Tocchet will have a tough decision to make if Demko gets injured again.
Silovs showed that even at 23 years old, he can compete at the NHL level. He tallied a 2.47 GAA and a .908 SV% in his first eight games and could definitely be called to guard the nets in the playoffs in case of injuries.
As for DeSmith, he has a 2.96 GAA and a .893 SV% this season. He's currently in the last year of his contract, which means that he could be pushed out of the team if Silovs earns the number two spot for next season.
