Marc Antoine Godin, who covers the Habs for The Athletic, has written an intriguing piece in which he interviews NHL scouts to gain a better understanding of the value of various players on the trade market, including Brendan Gallagher.

The tenacious 29-year-old forward, who has a six-year contract worth $6.5 million per season, is an outlier.

Any championship team would want a player and a character like that in the locker room and on the ice during crucial moments.

He continues to be a valuable asset to any organisation.

The scouts who were interviewed all agreed:

"I can confirm that when he signed his contract, there were at least 25 teams waiting to offer him the same deal, if not more. His track record is impeccable."

There are some reservations, but it appears that Jeff Gorton will be able to find a team that is interested in him, and he will not be required to hold back salary.

"On the other hand, there's no doubt that if Montreal holds back a half-million dollars in salary, they'll be able to get a first-round pick and possibly an extra prospect for Gallagher."

So, according to our understanding, some professional scouts believe that withholding salary will net the habs a first-round pick and possibly a prospect for Gallagher, but we also understand that he could be traded to the right team without withholding salary.
