Don Cherry's 89th Birthday Re-Sparks Movement to Fire Ron MacLean
Beloved if not begrudged, Don Cherry is celebrating his 89th birthday today. Cherry is still in the memory of many as the vibrant and honest reporter from hockey night in Canada, and the nostalgia fuel hasn't ceased yet.
With Cherry trending, unsurprisingly, his former co-worker and de-facto successor Ron MacLean is making the charts.
Many fans shared their passive-aggressive good wishes:
Happy Birthday Grapes! Sadly you were the first to fall on the sword while
@Ron_MacLean sold you down the river. Haven't watched HNIC since.
Happy Birthday Don! Hockey Night in Canada just isn't the same.
Happy birthday Don, can honestly say since you left hockey night in Canada it has gone down hill, I will not even watch anymore. And they wonder why viewership is down, not hard to figure out why. You are the best spokesmen Canada has ever had
This then extended to a spree of hate directly towards MacLean:
Ron, you're a sellout and a hack, unbearable to watch. Surprised anyone talks to you backstabber.
I'll never forget how the back stabbing Ron MacLean let his colleague/friend be treated. And all TSN or SN produce today is just weak no good garbage.
Thus, a petition has begun to have MacLean fired:
It can be assumed, however, that this will be to no avail, as Ron MacLean is likely here to stay.
Whether you like him or not, 89 years is a momentous occasion. Happy birthday, Don.
