Kyle Dubas denied interest in trading Matthew Knies or his first round pick for a rental this season, leading many to believe the Leafs were out of the running for Timo Meier.
However, a recent report from Kevin Weekes of ESPN has named the Leafs, Devils, Golden Knights, and Hurricanes as finalists in the Meier sweepstakes. Meier's physicality and impressive production make him a valuable asset and could make a significant impact for the Leafs.
Although re-signing Meier would be challenging due to his RFA status and $10M qualifying offer, the Leafs could trade his RFA rights for a decent return if they were unable to extend his contract. Ultimately, it may be necessary to trade Knies if it means securing Meier's services.
