Wayne Gretzky's impact on the sport is immense. As one of the greatest players in NHL history, people pay attention when he speaks.

He just made a significant proposal to Gary Bettman.

Wayne Gretzky Urges the NHL to Create a Bobby Orr Trophy

Last weekend, during a segment on TNT's broadcast, The Great One made his case for introducing new awards.

Here's what he said:

«We need a Bobby Orr Trophy, for the most points by a defenseman, and then (a trophy) for the best defensive defenseman. Have two awards. You should honor Bobby Orr, him and Gordie Howe, the greatest players ever."

In his opinion, Orr and Howe deserve to have trophies named after them because they are the greatest players in NHL history.

The current award for the best defenseman, the Norris Trophy, recognizes the player who has excelled throughout the season in all aspects of the game.

Splitting the award into two would make sense, as many players excel as either offensive or defensive defensemen. They, too, deserve recognition.

It remains to be seen if the NHL will heed Gretzky's advice, but as we've seen on multiple occasions in recent years, Gary Bettman rarely listens to others' ideas when it comes to making changes in HIS league.
