Until they make a move and bring in a player who can make an impact, it's difficult to maintain interest in the repetitive rumors.
However, things are starting to look up, as Elliotte Friedman recently revealed on the "Leaf Report" podcast that the Leafs are considering two new players.
The first is Carson Soucy, a physical defenseman for the Seattle Kraken who fits the mold of what the Leafs are searching for.
Although Soucy's stats may not be the most impressive, his 6'5", 210-pound frame and 100 hits in just 54 games make him an attractive option.
The second player that caught the Leafs' attention is Scott Laughton, a breakout star on the Philadelphia Flyers this season.
Laughton has already accumulated 31 points in 51 games and is on pace to surpass his previous career high.
His ability to do the little things, such as delivering big hits and blocking shots, make him an asset to any team, especially during the playoffs.
Unlike Soucy, Laughton has a remaining contract until 2025-26 with a reasonable salary of $3M per season.
Of course, there are some potential hurdles to overcome. It remains to be seen if the Leafs are willing to meet Seattle's asking price for Carson Soucy, and there's no guarantee that the Flyers will be interested in moving Scott Laughton.
Nevertheless, there's still a little over two weeks until the trade deadline, and there's still time for the Leafs to make a move if they're serious about acquiring either player.
Both Soucy and Laughton could make a significant impact for the Leafs come playoff time, checking many of the boxes that the team needs to fill.
