Sheldon Keefe Provides Crucial Update on Ilya Samsonov's Injury
Samsinov suffered a scary lower-body injury in the third period of the game. The Toronto goaltender attempted to block a shot on goal from Oiler Leon Draisaitl but was unsuccessful and was caught down on the ice after stretching too far.
After medical personnel rushed to the scene, this injury forced him out for the remainder of the game. This left Martin Jones in his place for the small amount of time left on the clock.
"Ilya Samsonov appeared to suffer a lower-body injury stretching to attempt to make a save, and has left the game" "Ilya Samsonov was injured on the play and has been replaced by Martin Jones."
Despite this seemingly painful accident, Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Sheldon Keefe suggested that this injury is not as bad as it seems.
In an unusual turn of events, what looked like a potential long-term recovery may be a brief rest period, or none at all.
"Sheldon Keefe says it looks like Ilya Samsonov is fine.
Didn't provide much more."
«It's not anything near what it appeared or what I thought it might've been It looks like he will be fine and won't miss any time.»
With this being the second recent near-miss in just a week with this player, fans are becoming skeptical of Samsonov.
"'I'm not going to give you too many details right now, but it looks like he'll be fine and won't miss any time.'
Ilya Samsonov appears to avoid a major injury, again, for the second time in a week. ⤵️"
"So he faked it on the ice to avoid completely blowing a 5-goal lead because he couldn't stop anything in the third period. What a great teammate and credible person. . Now I know for certain which goalie Treliving needs to get rid of in the off-season."
The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Oilers 6-3.
Despite this setback near the end of the game, the Toronto Maple Leafs still reigned supreme with a final score of 6-3. Part of this can be attributed to Auston Matthews, who has been on fire this season. Now with his 58th goal of the season, he stands 9 goals ahead of Zach Hyman of the Edmonton Oilers.
"Auston Matthews puts it into the empty net 🚨
58th of the season"
On top of this achievement, tonight's game marked a special moment in franchise history, as Matthews and William Nylander became the first pair of Leafs to earn 90 points each before reaching 70 games in the season.
"Auston Matthews & William Nylander
First pair of teammates in Leafs franchise history with 90 points each prior to the 70-game mark of a season"
With another victory under their belt, the Maple Leafs team and fans were quick to focus on ensuring their goalie was doing alright.
"The Leafs hang on!!!
The focus now shifts to Ilya Samsonov's health.
#leafsforever"
