Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has left the team to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one. The announcement was made by the team's Senior Vice President and General Manager, Brian MacLellan.

It was initially unclear how long Ovechkin would be absent, but head coach Peter Laviolette has now confirmed that he will be out for the "foreseeable future" with no expectation of his return for at least a week.
