NHL Insider Proposes a Massive Trade Idea for the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs are poised for a deep playoff run. Their offense is thriving, their defense has adapted incredibly well, and their goaltending has been good - when their tandem isn't injured.

If there's one position where the Leafs should make a splash, it's between the pipes, and insider Nick Kypreos has given two suggestions.

Thatcher Demko and Juuse Saros are both signed long-term at $5-million per. This is only $312,000 more than what Matt Murray costs the Leafs. It would cost significant assets, but adding an elite netminder wouldn't only improve the Leafs chances this year, but open up a genuine window of contention.

The alternative is to run a full audible and go much bolder in net.

If you feel you're still truly exposed with the unpredictability of Murray and an unproven playoff performer in Samsonov, who still might not be ready for prime time, then you push for Vancouver's Thatcher Demko or Juuse Saros in Nashville. Many believe Saros will be available when the Predators finally slip out of playoff contention in two or three weeks. Both are 27 years old and locked into extended contracts with very reasonable $5-million (U.S.) cap hits.

Either one could easily end the Leafs' goalie controversies for the next few years. And more important, either one could boost team confidence that goes beyond anything Murray or Samsonov can provide.

Kyle Dubas has big decisions to make. Will he go after the big fish, or will he choke once again?
